Even better than the best ever
On the theme of American arrogance, I was blown away on Saturday when I was driving home through North Carolina and saw a billboard that featured proud-looking members of every branch of the military, and above them, said in big block letters:
North Carolina: The Nation's Most Military-Friendly StateIs it really a competition? I try as hard as I can to keep my cynicism in check, but this makes all of the Support Our Troops stickers and signs just seem like childish one-upsmanship, and it reduces patriotism into nothing but a weapon of superiority.

I saw that sign too. They just put that up.
I didn't have quite the same reaction that you did, but I think it's absurd nonetheless.
I wonder if they're worried about base closures?
I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. It's sponsored by banks, and I'm sure they have a lot riding on the bases staying open. Then again, something huge would have to happen for Bragg and Lejeune to close.
It's really the wording that I object to. It's not "North Carolina salutes our military" or even, say, "The home of more of our military than any other state", but it's "the most military-friendly". The MOST. That's the part that gets me.
All their base are belong to us.
