Better

In the category of Best Belle and Sebastian Show at the 930 Club in 2006, the nominees are: March 5th and March 6th. And the winner is...

March 6th, thanks to a higher level of energy and a better set list.

In the category of Most Unfortunate Timing for A Backup Singer to Lose Her Voice Because They're Recording the Whole Thing for NPR, the winner is...

The New Pornographers last night, who could barely put together a full set, had to "kill time" in between songs, and had to make up for the fact that their backing singer couldn't sing at all. The songs were still great, though.

And to the few of you who didn't already know, all of last night's amazing show is streaming over at NPR.

Another comment/footnote from me. In a triumph of multi-tasking, I've done work, listened to the concert stream and kept track of the setlist, since the NPR site has it wrong. For the record:

Ryman show was really great last night. I think I was underplaying it, so I was really impressed with the energy that B&S brought - and they had some cool lighting. I was also really impressed by their graciousness - they seemed genuinely happy to be there and such, so that was a highlight - along with a cool nod to the Ryman with a Hank Williams number ("Lost Highway") by Stevie Jackson. Not sure about the playlist - but it seems a bit different from the one listed above - at least in the order. Anyway, it was a really fun show. My favorite they played had to be "Your Cover's Blown" - yeah, I know, that was an easy one. Tons of people there from all over the southeast - which I know because they took an informal poll during the show - which was pretty fun.

New Pornos were pretty great too - I'd go see them anytime, anyplace. You're right about the lighting though - it felt like we were intruding on their soundcheck or something. A highlight: "Bleeding Heart Show", followed by AC Newman calling out the guy who stood in one of the front rows with his hands extended as if in a revival during the entire song. Funny stuff.

Oh, and the Neko stand-in (how annoying would it be to go around in life being known as the "Neko stand-in"?), had her voice back - for awhile - it kind of faded towards the end, but it was a valiant effort. She was good though. Also, I should mention, the sound for B&S was AMAZING - not so much for the New Pornos though - strangily, but man, B&S were dialed in perfectly.
