Long walks and sci-fi movies

One of the biggest surprises to me since I've started trying to post everyday is that I've gone from wracking my brain trying to think of something to write about to having to pare down the number of subjects. There are usually at least 2 or 3 things that I want to write about, and even though none of them are any more interesting or worthwhile of a post than in the days where I was short on subjects, it really does a lot to recommend taking the brain out for a walk once a day.

So while I'd love to tell you about my thoughts on the tragedy of the school shootings in Minnesota, and how dumbfounding it is to think that he shot and killed the unarmed security guard at the metal detectors at the school (just a thought: people going on shooting rampages through school hallways will probably not try to sneak in their three guns and bulletproof vest through a metal detector), I'll semi-resist. I think there was enough sad news to ponder over on Monday. Instead, here's a song:

Andrew Bird, "Fake Palindromes"
Here's a perfect example of a song whose infuriating brevity just turns it into one of those songs that you replay again and again. The amazing loud violin part (just try to not play air-violin) is maddeningly short, especially at the very end. This album is, like all of Andrew Bird's albums, really nice. Very recommended.

dang. I quite like this Andrew Bird cat. I've not heard him before, and I'm really out of the loop with what's good and new. After completing a project for a co-worker, I've been absolutely killing the Red House Painters. That and some of the other "old standby" stuff. Next chance that I get, I'm gonna buy one of this dude's records.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I've really liked all of Andrew Bird's albums, but besides his "pop" album, The Swimming Hour, his stuff is much quieter than this track. Both this new album, The Mysterious Production... and the one before, Weather Systems, are really hushed and beautiful. Along with the new Keren Ann album and Joanna Newsom last year, it's proof that quiet, sophisticated music can still provide a challenge for those of us who feel like our musical tastes have slowed down and quieted a little.
