Help me areseven readers, you're my only hope

So Megarita and I were listening to the Iron and Wine and Calexico EP last night as I tried to con her into doing the emusic thing, and we noticed that there are not one, but two song—two of the best songs on the thing—whose melodies sound very familiar, but we couldn't place the melodies to either. They're both amazing songs, but they sound a whole lot like something. Something...else.

For the grand prize of my respect and admiration, listen to the songs—"Prison on Route 41" and "16, Maybe Less"—in the jukebox and tell me what those melodies remind me of.

Nothing specific, to my ears, but they both have a heavy Nick Drake/Donovan cutting into Neil Young thing going on.

Prison on Route 41 is very much like...argh! I can't think of it, but within the first few notes I was singing a tune that works with it...

I won't rest until I figure this out.

To my mind, Iron & Wine is still writing the same song as when he wrote "Lion's Mane". Only now it's called "Prison on Route 41".

Both songs make me think about Leonard Cohen on a good day, maybe after he has had a swig of cough medicine.

I'm reminded of Cowboy Junkies and also of Patsy Cline.
