Pick a pun on "pick" or "draft"
So, listen, I'll be away from this blog for a while. Now, you're straight on feeding the links, right? They each need a few clicks a day or they'll die and shrivel and leave the nastiest smell you can imagine. No, even nastier than that. I'll be back once I'm done with my CIA mission to assasinate several foreign dignitaries and force terrorist groups to take the blame. Oh, erm...did I say CIA mission? I meant my trip to Chicago. Yeah. Chicago. To assasinate Hans. I mean visit. To visit Hans. Ha! Where is my brain today?!
On Saturday, I'm hoping to take some time out of my not-in-any-way-assassinating fun and watch at least the first pick of the NFL draft, as my Texans have the first pick. The following is my take on their pick, and the sound you hear is all but three of my viewers clicking to other sites.
Option 1: Reggie Bush
While this would be the most exciting pick, and the one most likely to pay highlight-reel dividends early on next season, I have to say that I'm a little nervous about the hype around this guy. I just can't imagine that he's THAT good, that he's really the next amazing back. I would feel more comfortable if he was being compared to some of the current great RBs, like Tomlinson or Alexander, but they're throwing around terms like "one of the greatest ever" and not noticing that that pronouncement is usually followed shortly by the phrase "not an every-down back". Verdict: I would actually like to see him be the Texan's pick, at least because he'd be the most exciting player. I'm just not sure that he's really going to be that great, but at the same time, what if he is? It'll haunt the Texans forever, that they could have had one of the greatest ever, a guy that everyone was predicting would be great, and they passed up on him. Playoffs or not, it's hard to live down passing on one of the greatest RBs of all time. It is a risk, but I think it's a worthwhile one.
Option 2: Mario Williams
So while Bush would be the thrilling pick, it wouldn't be much of a dropoff for Mario Williams. Sure, RBs are more exciting that DEs, but if Williams can pull off a 14-15 sack season, that would be as exciting as Bush pulling off a 1500 yard season. And while both are probably pretty unlikely next season, he has as good of a chance to be that thrilling, franchise player as Bush does, and would probably be cheaper. Verdict: I won't be disappointed at all, though I still kind of hope that Bush is the pick.
Option 3: Trade down
If someone is willing to give up a sick amount of picks for the chance to take Reggie Bush, this could be a really good option, especially if they could still get Ferguson, Hawk or Huff and another first rounder this year and another next year. They really could end up putting together a great team that way. But...I just don't think it's worth passing up on Williams or Bush to go with this option. The Texans have a lot of needs, yes, but I think they have so many needs that it's not going to be answered with one draft, no matter how many picks they have. Verdict: I understand the logic of this, but I'd rather not see it.

Dont worry about whether or not he's going to live up to the hype as being one of the greatest ever...if he's as productive as Shawn Alexander or LT...dude...consider it a slam-dunk-home-run-hole-in-one-100-yard-return-for-td kinda pick! ;)
Well, yeah...if he is Alexander or Tomlinson quality, that'd be fantastic. But with all of the "greatest ever" talk around him, he just has all the makings of a colossal bust, the kind that people will be talking about for decades.
"Speaking of busts, Mel Kiper III, have we ever seen the like of Reggie Bush, touted as the next great running back and who never cleared 500 yards in a season, and was waived and out of the NFL after three years?"
Are you speaking of the last RB to get drafted #1....Kijana Carter?
